Ferrets As Pets |
Ferrets are another really misunderstood animal here in Ireland. Did you know that they are the 4th most popular pet in England and the 3rd most popular pet in America? They aren't just for hunting! They make fantastic, funny, loving pets if cared for properly. Cottage Rescue takes in and re homes ferrets. Any Ferrets we have for adoption will be listed on the small animals for adoption page. There are several things to know about Ferrets before you decide to keep one as a pet though… |
Your new Ferret will need a large and spacious cage or hutch to live in. They can either live outdoors or indoors, that is up to you. They will require soft bedding like old t-shirts and jumpers to cuddle into for sleeping. DO NOT use pine or wood shavings as they are toxic to ferrets!! Ferrets are meat eaters and need to be fed either a high quality ferret kibble or raw meats such as beef mince, lamb mince, chicken parts, and rabbits. The meat has to be watched though and taken out if not eaten so it doesn't rot. They always need a fresh bottle of water in their cage as well. Male Ferrets are called 'hobs' and female Ferrets are called 'jills'. All Ferrets rehomed through Cottage Rescue are Spayed or Neutered. This makes them calmer and easier to handle and does cut down on the odour too! Female Ferrets come into season and have to be brought out of it by either mating or getting what is known as the 'jill jab'., they cannot come out of season on their own. If this isn't done the Jill can die from anaemia, another VERY good reason for spaying the female of ferrets. Using the Jill jab to bring the female out of season isn't something that should be done often as it has many side-effects. It is better to have her spayed or use a vasectomized hob to bring her out of season. Ferrets come in many colours, from different shades of sable, albinos (with the pink eyes), silvers and dark eyed white ferrets. We get many different ages, sizes and colours of coming into the rescue. The most important thing is to match your family with a Ferret of the right personality though. If you have read this information and are still interested in adopting a Ferret please look on the small animal homes needed page or call us and we will be happy to help. We are also available for help and advice on your Ferrets. Cottage Rescue will take in unwanted or straying Ferrets and find them loving homes. All Ferrets that come into us will be well handled and Neutered before being rehomed. Please ring Kelly on: 0879916 222 for any inquires on Ferrets! |
