Dog/Cat Cruelty

On Saturday evening 28/04/2007 we got a call from a very concerned member of the public about this dog, so the dog was brought out to us here in Cottage Rescue by a very nice man.

We were sickened and saddened by what we saw, somebody Amputated his leg in this horrific manner!

It was brutally removed at the joint in the elbow, he was very Dehydrated and Emaciated this poor dog was only skin and bone.

This poor dog broke his leg for what-ever reason and was left for 3 months without treatment and it would appear in that time he was also starved and then about three weeks ago they then decided to hack it off and they even put a few stitches in .

The pain and the agony this poor creature must have gone through in that time we cannot imagine but when you look into his eyes all you see is a hurt vacant look but we hope in time to bring the light back into those eyes and along with that trust!

We decided to call him Champ (short of Champion) Which is what he is!!

He had to wait until later in the week before he went to our Vet Marta to have the rest of his leg properly Amputated as he was too weak up and had to be fed up a bit, this poor dog was only a third of his proper body weight.

This was an act of HORRIFIC CRUELTY and is one of the worst cases that we have ever witnessed here at the Rescue.

We were delighted the way Champ came on and so was our Vet Marta, he came out of the operation extremely well and never looked back since.

The morning after his Operation he only needed a little help to stand up and he is flying around since.

A lot of our time and energy is put into answering calls on reported Cruelty Cases.

We allow the person reporting to remain anonymous  although we do like to have a phone number in case we have trouble finding the location of the animals in question.

We answer reports of cruelty to Dogs, Cats, Horses or Ponies and even Farm Animals.

It is a very hard and often times sad job, but helping the animals in desperate situations can be very rewarding.

We have a good few Cruelty cases on our Cruelty pages but we will WARN you

that some of the pics can be quite GRAPHIC………

A very sad and depressed looking Hope in the Pound before she came to Cottage Rescue...

A different Hope one month later heading off to the UK...

It took us 4 days to catch this poor Lurcher with this badly broken leg!

But we were successful in the end and he is safe here in the rescue and having a full Amputation of his leg on Tuesday 16th October 2007,

Here is a pic of Conan as that is what we decided to call him.

His Mange has cleared up and his operation was a complete success and he is all waggy tails now but is still slightly hesitant in coming when called but that will change in time as he was living slightly feral for many months.

He is delighted to have the leg off as it was useless to him for many months and it only weighed him down.

"Bunty" came into us during the summer of 2006. She was found wandering and had obviously been dumped when she was no longer of any use for breeding. She had a lot of litters of puppies in her time. Bunty was suffering horribly from Mange that had been left untreated. She only had one small strip of hair down her back and her skin was so inflamed it appeared red and was hot to the touch.  The poor girl spent all of her time scratching at her skin and was full of cuts from her toenails from the scratching.

After several weeks of special bathing, creams and treatment for the mange itself Bunty started looking better. The photo's show her from the day she came in and then again in 3 short weeks. Isn't the difference amazing? Bunty's wonderful staffie personality was able to shine after she healed and could finally think of something other then the horrible itching.

The owner of this animal refused to acknowledge that this dog was not living in proper conditions.

He was living in his own filth, chained up in this dirty little bit of a yard and worse still the chain was all wrapped around a bit of iron and the dog could not get into the shed  out of the bad weather that did not have any proper bedding, dirty water was provided and no evidence of food.

This dog was removed from the owner and he was cleaned up and was later adopted out to a good home.

The above dog was found as a result of a Cruelty Complaint, he had a tumour on his head that totally covered his eye as well.

His owner decided to do right by him after we were called by a concerned member of the public.

                    Before Grooming

Half way through grooming

Poor Molly was abandoned and she wandered into nice people who contacted us and we picked her up, she was very smelly and her coat was in a terrible state, she found it difficult to walk on account of her mats which were very uncomfortable for her, so Kelly gave her a clip and a good wash and she is off to the vets next week to get Spayed and also have a dental done as she needs to get teeth out and also have them cleaned and she wore a nice coat to keep her warm as it was very cold that time of year because she would have  missed the insulation of her very dirty coat.

"Remmy" is a case that came to us in October of 2006. A person called in about a dog that was in terrible condition and bleeding that had wandered into their garden. When Hannah arrived she found him lying there bleeding from three separate gunshot wounds. He was rushed into Brittas Vet Clinic where he had to remain for 12 days. He had to go through 2 separate surgeries to repair the wounds.

When Remmy was released from the Vet's he went to Kelly's house and spent his recovery time in her kitchen as he wasn't in good enough shape yet to live in the kennels at the Rescue. He is a wonderfully sweet Border Collie and has come along in leaps and bounds. Sara at Wiccaways Border Collie Rescue in Wales offered him a space and we are so grateful to them for giving him a chance for a new life.  He had spent several months in Kelly's care living with her son and other dogs and cats and he has since been homed, his new owners have contacted us and are very happy with him.

Remmy on the vets table the night he was shot..        A close up of one of his worst wounds.                             Remmy in recovery!

It is terrible the way some of the Greyhounds in this Country are treated, the above dogs were brought back to full health and got lovely homes.

Poor Greyhounds.

Hope's Story

Hope came to us from a  Dublin Pound and she was very ill, emaciated and full of mange and she also had a bad infection and muscle wastage which more than likely meant that she had given most of her life caged up. She had to have an emergency Spay as her womb was badly infected and she was also near having pups that were dead inside her and were also part of her problem and she was also very dehydrated and emaciated. She had to stay with our Vet Marta for a couple of nights on a drip and for a few days it was touch and go with her but she made a fantastic recovery and one month later she went over to the UK and was later homed. She captured a lot of hearts here in Ireland and there are a few people here to thank for saving this dog … Ann who was the lovely person that spotted her in the Dundalk Pound and also Judith who sponsored all her vets bills etc and to Jill who kept her in her home overnight the night before she came down to us. This dog was a pleasure to have here and was so thankful of everything done for her and all the time she was sick her tail was always wagging when she saw us.

Have a lovely life Hope…  You deserve it so much….

Chief Dan George:

The end result

Believe it or not this is a German Shepherd!

I got a call about this poor German Shepherd 27/05/2009 from a lady near Cashel, she had found this dog in her shed when she got home from work and I collected him at 7pm.

He is a young dog and is very emaciated and has dreadful mange, very weak, dehydrated and hardly able to walk.

Just look at his poor face and try to imagine how sore and itchy he must be.

The pain and suffering of this animal could have been prevented if his owner had obtained a simple mange treatment from a vet.

There is no need what-so-ever for this kind of neglect/cruelty.

No excuse for his suffering…..

I got a call on the 23rd Feb from a nice man that found a 6/7 month old Whippet/Lurcher type dog in a local town and she had a bad injury to her hip and pelvis, so I brought her over to Marta that evening and her hip had been dislocated for about 2/3 weeks and her pelvis was fractured as well but it was too late to put the hip back in place and she was so thin and dehydrated and we had to build her up for her operation.

She had to go down to Cork to an Orthapaedic Surgeon (Shane Guerin with Gilabbey Vets and she had to have the femur head removed and she is now on kennel rest and hopefully the operation will be a success, she is a very cute little lady and will be up for adoption soon.

Below are pics of this lady that we called Little Pekoes.

She later went over to the UK where she found a great home through S.L.R. Rescue.

Poor little Pekoes left to fend for herself in great pain.

Relaxing on the couch.

After her operation.                                                                         Just look at that cheeky face.

This pic was taken shortly before he went to live in the Uk.

What a big difference in this boy now,

this pic was taken this evening 25/06/2009, he is coming on great.

Update.

This lovely dog has been homed in the UK and now lives with a lady called Jan and thank you to Ron for all his help.

*Poor Lurcher*

Her poor body.                                                                                           Her bottom full of sores.

Her back full of sores.                                                  Her thin tail without hair.                                             Her Pretty face.

I got a call about this poor abandoned Lurcher that was dropped off near a lady;s house who caught her and rang me, so I headed off to collect her last night around 9pm on 16/09/ 2009.

She is totally emaciated, dehydrated, covered in mange with only about 30% of hair on her body but she has the sweetest little face that would melt anybodys heart.

She will have a nice bath today and we will begin her treatment and she will be a beauty in no time.

But imaging how cold, hungry and bewildered this dog is and she has a lovely kind gentle personality.

At this stage of my life in Animal Welfare I have given up trying to comprehend why people treat animals in this way.

Update on Lilly in her new home since 07/11/2009

She is very happy roaching and lazing about on the sofa as all Lurchers and Greyhounds love to do.

Her new owner sent us these pics 3 days after adopting her and says it was like having a new baby in the house with all the friends and neighbours and family calling to meet her, what a lucky dog she is to have been homed with such a loving family and she also lives with another dog and 2 cats..

Cottage Rescue is a Registered Charity: CHY 17184

         Updated: 30 July 2010

Hard to believe that this is the same dog as above but this is Lucas in his new home in the Uk and Pam took these pics shortly after he arrived and he now lives with 2 other German Sheps and Pam was only meant to foster him until a nice home came up for him but she fell madly in love with him and she adopted him herself and she left him with the name Lucas and the reason I called him that to begin with was as he was so dehydrated when he came in I was giving him lukazade.

What a fantastic out come for this dog that came in to us in such dreadful condition but he will never look back again because he now so loved and adored by Pam.

How can people be so cruel to let a young dog get into this condition?

*Home Spay Botch Job*

This poor dog came into us after a member of the public found her wandering and when we looked at her we found a couple of stitches and what looked to be a hernia, we were not sure if the stitches were due to being Spayed or were due to a section so we brought her to our vet who had to open her anyway to sort out the hernia and to her horror she found out that the poor dog had been Spayed and she said that no Vet would spay a dog in this way.

She had no inner stitches and all her muscle and outer skin were sewn together which must have been very painful and sore for poor Mai, Marta had to remove a lot of damaged tissue and some of the muscle and she is mow on kennel rest for a week and has to be kept quiet.

Mai has been homed.

The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animals are treated.

Mahatma Ghandi…..

*Poor King Charles*

I was gone off for an hour with Kelly on rescue business on Sunday 20/09/2009 and when we got back here we found this poor King Charles tossed into my front yard, she has no hair on one of her ears and a lot of hair missing on her bottom and under her body and it is very light on the top of her back and she had a horrible ear yeast infection but at least she is safe now and will be cured and will get a nice new home.

Update on Callie in her new home 14/11/2009

Here is Callie in her new home a few weeks with her very loving family that love her so much and look at how she loves to be cuddled and how happy she is.

Poor Abandoned Stray Dog!

I got a call about this dog on 30/06/2009 very early in the morning from a lady that had caught him in her shed, she had been feeding him for a while as he was straying.

He had been hit with a car on Saturday evening and she could not catch  him until Tuesday morning so went and collected him, we were expecting a half wild dog and I was pleasantly surprised to find him a lovely friendly young dog and quite handsome as well, I brought him over to Marta that day and he was x-rayed and sedated and then she put a splint on his leg as it was broken and very swollen and he is now on kennel rest for the next 5--6 weeks and he even has a lovely boot to wear over his bandage while out of the kennel to clean himself and help keep his bandage dry and clean.

He was so good when we picked him up and so brave even though he was in great pain and when he was over at Marta's he never once growled while getting his leg examined, he will make a smashing companion for a nice family.

Update

He went over to Stevie in the UK and is now very happy in his new home.

Sweetness now renamed LOTTIE is very happy in her new home where she is living with cats (who boss her around) her new Mammy is very proud of her and loves her to bits as do all the customers that come into the shop as well.

This was a real rags to riches story.

Relaxing as all Whippet girls do on a bed.                                    A day out on the beach playing ball.

Our Poor Little Whippet Girl

On Sunday 25th of May 2008 we received a call about this poor creature from a very nice family who are also Greyhound people, they were very concerned about her, they tried their best to catch her but could not. So we set out after 8pm and we caught her with out too much effort as she was exhausted, starved, dehydrated and so scared and nervous, she screamed when Kelly lifted her to put her into the van. She has given all day sleeping and she is on 4 small feeds a day consisting of a special diet and I treated her for mange and she is on antibiotics as well. This poor Whippet is only 1 year old but she has a very happy future ahead of her.

Here are pic's of SWEETNESS two weeks later.

As you can see she was much brighter and more alert and she really coming along nicely and began to gain more confidence and GREAT NEWS she got booked for a home here in Ireland.
