Butchery to a dog's leg

Champ "Our Hero Dog"

On Saturday evening 28/04/2007 we got a call from a very concerned member of the public in Cashel about this dog, so the dog was brought out to us here in Cottage Rescue by a very nice man…….

We were sickened and saddened by what we saw, somebody tried to Amputated his leg in this horrific manner!

It was brutally removed at the joint in the elbow, he was very dehydrated and Emaciated this poor dog is only skin and bone.

This poor dog broke his leg for what-ever reason and was left for 3 months without treatment and it would appear in that time he was also starved and then about three weeks ago they then decided to hack it off and they even stitched it.

The pain and the agony this poor creature must have gone through in that time we cannot even try to imagine but when you look into his eyes all you see is a hurt vacant look but we hope in time to bring the light back into those eyes and trust!

We decided to call him Champ (short of Champion) Which is what he was!!

The stump he was left with

A lot of our time and energy is put into answering calls on reported Cruelty Cases.

We allow the person reporting to remain anonymous  although we do like to have a phone number in case we have trouble finding the location of the animals in question.

We answer reports of cruelty to Dogs, Cats, Horses or Ponies and even Farm Animals.

It is a very hard and often times sad job, but helping the animals in desperate situations can be very rewarding.

We have a good few Cruelty cases on our Cruelty pages but we will WARN you

that some of the pics can be quite GRAPHIC………

Just look at the pain & fear & sadness in that face.

This was an act of HORRIFIC CRUELTY and is one of the worst cases that we have ever witnessed here at Cottage Rescue.

We were delighted the way Champ has come on and so is our Vet Marta, he came out of the operation extremely well and has not looked back since.

The morning after his Operation he only needed a little help to stand up and he is flying around since.

Our Vet Marta could not perform an operation to remove the rest of his leg until we had built him up a bit on special food and he also had pain killers and antibiotics for a week to have the rest of his leg properly Amputated as he was too weak and would not have lasted through the operation and he was only a third of his proper body weight.

Here is on the left pictured with a bandage wrapped all around his stump so that he could do no more damage as he was using it as a lever to get up and down  and it had to be removed as it would have been a useless weight to carry around

A few days before his amputation

This lovely pic was taken by Marta the day she removed his stitches.

He was later homed to a lovely American couple who loved him for who he was and not because of his disability or difference and when they came to meet him they fell in love with him and took notice of his missing leg.

I got this lovely letter in the post today 4th November 2008 and I wanted to share it with you as did Champ now named SULLY and his new family,

It is a story with a very happy ending!

Ten Favours a Dog Asks From a Man

1- My life lasts between ten to fifteen years and Every separation from you means suffering for me.

Think about this before you decide whether or not to take me!

2- Give me time to understand what you are asking from me.

3- Instill confidence in me - I thrive on it!

4- Do not be angry with me for a long time and do not lock me up for punishment!

You have your work, your pleasure, your joy - I have only you.

5- Talk often to me! Even if I do not understand you completely, I do understand the tone of your voice when you talk to me.

6- Know that, no matter how I am being treated, I shall never forget it!

7- Keep in mind, before you hit me, that my jaws could crush the knuckles of your hand with ease, but that I do not make use of them.

8- Before you scold me when working with me, consider: perhaps I am uncomfortable from digesting my last meal; perhaps I was exposed to the sun too long; or perhaps I have a worn-out heart.

9- Take care of me when I am old -- you too are going to be old one day.

10- Be with me when my going gets rough. Everything is easier for me when you are beside me.
