WARNING…… Some of the images on Our Cruelty Pages can be quite GRAPHIC |
A lot of our time and energy is put into answering calls on reported Cruelty Cases. We allow the person reporting to remain anonymous although we do like to have a phone number in case we have trouble finding the location of the animals in question. We answer reports of cruelty to Dogs, Cats, Horses or Ponies and even Farm Animals. It is a very hard and often times sad job, but helping the animals in desperate situations can be very rewarding. We have a good few Cruelty cases on our Cruelty pages but we will WARN you that some of the pics can be quite GRAPHIC……… Some have happy ending and others have not! Not all the of the following cases were brought to court, but all the animals were Rehabilitated and Rehomed or their living conditions were improved with advice to the owner and some sadly were released from pain and suffering by being PTS. |

*Poor Cat* |

Nikki got a call about this poor male cat, a man had found him in all the bad weather at the beginning of Jan 2010 in his garden frozen and stuck to the grass with frost. He was malnourished and his bottom was prolapsed as you can see from the pics and the bottom front of his jaw had been injured and the vet thinks that it may be due to a rat bite, you can see the exposed teeth and partial bone and it had become septic, he also had frost bite to both ears and his back legs. He is a very friendly, loving and trusting cat who loves attention.. He is now happy in his new home. |

Look how friendly he is. |

*Poor Shih Tzu with awful matted coat abandoned* |
Just look at her poor body condition. Her blind eye. Her poor face all matted. |
Hair shaved from under her chin still attached to her. Dreadlocks under her ears. .1 kg of filthy hair that was removed from her. |
Half shaved under sedation. What a sad little face. Comfy in her coat asleep. |
This poor dog was found yesterday by kind people who contacted Nikki about her today and she then came into our care 20th Feb 2010. She is a Shih Tzu who is no more than 3 years old but as you can see from the pics that she had a very uncaring owner who treated her very badly and I would think that she had never known love in her short life or the respect that should be shown to every living creature. She had to be sedated at the Vets to have all her coat shaved off as it stank to high heaven and we can only try to imagine how awful she must have felt, how unloved she must have been, she had no nice bed to lie in. the cold and misery she must have endured. You can see she is nearly blind in one of her eyes and her good eye was totally covered in dirt and hair so this means that she has also been locked up in a dark shed for a long time, I cant wait to see her reaction tomorrow when I let her out into daylight and she can see again and move around in comfort. Shame on you who owned and abused this little dog, how dare you do this to any living creature and also shame on anybody that knew of her or anybody that chooses to ignore any animal living in horrid conditions. We have named her Shelly. I would like to thank her previous owners for dumping her and to say that it is the only good thing you done for her and say SHAME ON YOU for letting such a sweet little dog get into such a horrific state!!! Shelly has been homed in the UK, thanks to Stevie. |
Nikki picked up this cat just in the nick of time in a busy town on 21st March 2010 and 12 hours later she gave birth to 4 Kittens but sadly only 2 survived and aren't they so cute and Mom was later named Libby. What a lucky cat and her 2 kittens. |

Here is the latest pic of Shelly just before she went off to the UK to get a nice home with lots of thanks to Stevie. |

This poor Horse was abandoned tied to a fence on a quiet road and two nice ladies found him and brought him to us at the end of April 2010, He has rain scald, bad lice infestation and a belly full of worms and he is also fairly thin which you cant see in the pic because he still had his winter coat on. He was dumped because horses ended up being too expensive on people to keep so they were dumping them all over the place, horses just became excess baggage and came down so much in price and after all if they did not want him as a stallion it would have cost them money to get him cut. WOW you can what a difference in him after 6 weeks good feeding, worm dose and lice treatment. There is no need what-so-ever to let an animal get into that condition and then dump him on the side of a lonely road with no food or water He is one of the lucky ones and we changed his name from Romeo to Ronnie after his Castration.. lol. You see his details here on our Horse Homing page. Please ring Hannah for more details on 087 97 1919 |

Rose Bud and Highlander came in with 4 other ponies but sadly these 2 Ponies had to be Put Down soon after coming into us as rescue had come too late for them! Highlander had lost his fight for life and you could see it in his eyes that he had given up, he was only 2 years old, very emaciated which you cant see in the pic due to his winter coat and so weak that he could not even eat a bit of ration and totally worm bound. Rose Bud had also given up and that look was in her eyes, she had very bad cracks in her hooves that went up into the cornets which can be very sore and painful on a horse, she was also emaciated like Highlander and so very thin and sadly she went into colic and she was also very worm bound and she was also wild as she had never been handled and it stressed her so much to have us catch her, so we had to make a decision on both of them which saddened us very much. Our mission in Animal Welfare is to ease the suffering of animals, be it to make them better and send them off to good homes or do the kindest thing and say good bye to them and put an end to their suffering. Lets hope there is a Karma out there and their owner will get his dues when his time comes, I wonder will he have a last gentle word whispered in his ear and a gentle touch and somebody even a stranger to say they cared about him? Like they had… I hope NOT………………... |

*Poor Staffie boy left tied to my gate * |

Nikki got a call on 21st April 2010 about this poor dog and the sad thing is that she was totally blind, she seems to have been abandoned as she was in a very emaciated condition and very dehydrated and had a bad gash on the inside of her leg and Nikki named her Hope. Poor Hope spent the a few nights at the vets as she had to go on antibiotics and then they tried to stitch the wound which sadly was unsuccessful because she was not a young dog and she had that wound a while but she was so quiet and placid and all she wanted was love and comfort for the rest of her life. I would like to thank Nikki for taking her in and doing right by her and also to Kelly (Nikki's daughter and her Granddaughter Mai) for taking her into their hearts and home and caring for her and giving her good memories and love on her last days on this earth. But sadly Hope was pts 26th April 2010, she was gone too far to save her and she was having seizures as well and it was the kindest thing to do for her as she was very old, very emaciated and had a few other things going on as well. RIP Hope you knew you were loved in your last hours of need with a such a lovely family. It's been a bad time here in Cottage Rescue with Hope being Pts and 2 lovely ponies as well. Bad, Bad Karma to all to their previous owners! |
This lovely boy was left tied to my gate on 19th May 2010 on a very hot day and we were supposed to be going away for those few days but luckily we did not due to my illness, I wonder what people thought when they saw him tied to my gate with my van sitting in the yard, what a cruel act to do, he had no water or food only his yellow ball and we have no idea how long he was left there with the heat on the sun beating down on him with no shade and he is such a sweet little dog. Scooter was homed locally which we were delighted with. |

Blind in both eyes. Her poor injury to her leg and you can see how swollen it is on the outside as well. |

* Too late to save this Poor Shetland foal * |
We got a call on Wednesday 9th of June 2010 but sadly we were too late to save this poor creature who had been dead for a few days, seems he was left to die in a shed with a stable rug thrown over him. He was only about 6-8 months old and all ready had shoes on him, poor creature. |

He was riddled in lice which is very uncomfortable for any animal. |
Just look at the difference in his face and eyes. |
When he came in, just look at his coat. What a turn around 6 weeks later. |
Here he is in the field with his friend a Gelding after his operation, what a good friend he has as he was licking him and keeping him on the move and even brought him up to the water trough. |

* Poor horses * |

We got a call on Monday 14th June 2010 about these two ponies saying that one was in an awful emaciated condition. We all ready had to do 2 cruelty checks first and then we got to these two, so we had to get out a lovely guard and a nice vet to say that we could move them to the rescue. We called the 8 year old mare Blossom and she is in a very emaciated condition and was a bit weak but she will get plenty of feed now and lots of supplements to help her to gain weight, we hope to update you on her progress in weeks to come when she should have some nice weight put on. We called the 2 year old Breeze and she is in good condition and we think that she may be a daughter of Blossom as they seem to be very united and Breeze watches over her Mum and constantly guards her as well. Poor Blossom still has shoes on which makes us think that she may have been used for riding or trotting up to recently and we are actively seeking out the owner to bring him/her to court for cruelty. This pair were returned to their owners as they did prove to us that they had bought the emaciated mare for a big amount of money in order to save her which they proved to us and we also looked at their other horse and also to see where these mares were going to be grazing. We gave them good solid advice which they were willing to accept and gave us written permission to check at any time on the animals in their care, we felt there was no point in putting them through a court of law when they had saved this mare and had a totally different personality to the other mare that came n and also the other animal they had, They paid all expenses incurred by the rescue of these mares. So we think that this is a happy ending for both mares. We will keep you all updated on her progress as we will be keeping a good eye on all 3 animals. Sometimes we feel that we are better to work with people rather than spend a day in court and to help them with their animals rather than go again them as some people really do not know about the animals they take on. |

This is Blossom, just look at her poor body. This is Breeze and she is quite a poser. Look at the difference in their two rumps |

* Collar embedded in neck of this poor Collie * |
Gabriella got a call on Wednesday 23rd of June 2010 about this poor Border Collie abandoned in a garden, so off she went and immediately took action and brought the dog to me. The smell was horrible of rotten flesh as her puppy collar was embedded in her neck and as Gabriella was taking off the collar her flesh began to come away as well but we were lucky that we got to her in time because a couple of days later the eggs would have hatched out and there would have been maggots as well on account of the weather we are having at the moment. She is one lucky dog to have Gabriella rescue her when she did. She is very comfortable now, we have cleaned her up, removed dead flesh and cut the hair around her neck and she is on pain killers and antibiotics and is sporting a lovely yellow bandage that will have to be changed every day washed and cream put on her neck and will of course have the usual Manuka honey in her feed and put on her neck as well. She ate a hearty supper last night. I think we shall call her Manuka on account on the fantastic healing powers of this honey. I will update her pic in a week or tow and there will be a big difference in her neck. Update on Manuka 14 days after rescue! As you can see from the above pics taken on 6th July 14 days after we took her in and gave her some tender loving care you can see the difference in this Collie's neck. I am delighted with the way it has healed and how she has come on in leaps an bounds and has become so playful and friendly and what a smashing dog she is. I can now say that Manuka is ready for homing but she will always have to wear a loose collar and a harness to walk her in as she may have certain tenderness in her neck. Well done to Manuka and what a pleasure she is. |

* Just look at this poor mare. * |

I got a call on 24th June 2010 about this mare in a field from a friend in rescue, so we headed off to have a look at her. She had very bad Sarcoid's that had gone out of control and all we could do was recommend to the owner to Put her down humanly to end her misery. I am so fed up of all this crap in rescue at the moment that I sometimes feel my heart is not in it anymore. I believe that the smell of rotting flesh was terrible but my nose is not that good anymore, sometimes it works and thankfully this time it did not work. At least her suffering is now over and she is now at peace running free at rainbow bridge. |

* Sadly we were too late to save this poor Heron * |
I got a call on 14th July 2010 about a big bird injured on a farm yard near Holycross but I could not get there as I was picking up a dog in Tipperary town so I rang Nikki who was able to go out and collect this poor Heron in her lunch hour. But sadly we were too late to save her as her wing was in an awful state as it had been broken for a week or so and it was all infected and had maggots in it, so it was humanly PTS. At least her suffering is now over and she is now at peace running free at rainbow bridge. |
